A FAMILY are holding a charity event to mark their son getting the all-clear after being diagnosed with cancer five years ago.

Harvey Davies, now aged 12, was diagnosed with stage 3 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in March 2009 and after undergoing chemotherapy and radiation has now got the five-year all clear.

And to mark the occasion, mum Clare and dad Stuart are organising a black-tie event to raise money for Clic Sargent, a charity that supported the family, and Child Flight, which helped them go on a dream holiday to Florida.

Mrs Davies, of Brookfield Street, Leigh, said: “When Harvey was six my mum noticed a lump on his neck. We took him to the doctor, who referred him to a specialist, and he diagnosed him with stage 3 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

“It was such a shock. I didn’t expect it because he had no other symptoms.

“He had five tumours, and they were big ones, in his neck. When he was about to start treatment, which was originally supposed to be six weeks of chemotherapy and no radiation, they did a scan and found it had spread to his spleen.

“He ended up having six months of chemotherapy and 12 sessions of radiotherapy.”

Although Harvey went into remission after the treatment he has still had to attend regular check-ups and will have to visit The Christie once a year to check there have been no lasting side effects from having radiation.

His mum said: “We wanted to make life as normal as possible for Harvey. We didn’t want his illness to be the one thing that defined us but now he has got the all-clear it is time to give something back.

“Clic Sargent were a massive support. We had a social worker who would call me up all the time and check I was ok.

“Once she called when I was having a terrible day because the washing machine had broken down and the next day a new one was delivered. And Child Flight took us on a trip of a lifetime and they wouldn’t be able to do that without people fundraising for them.”

The fundraiser will be at Rendezvous in Astley on May 9 and Clare is looking for businesses to sponsor the event and for donations for a raffle and auction.
