COUNCIL bosses have taken to Twitter to answer questions on the latest budget.

Deputy chief executive Paul McKevitt and assistant director of finance Andrew Taylor who took over the @WiganCouncil feed on Wednesday to answer a wide range of questions from mandatory spending to Japanese knotweed.

Using the hashtag #wiganbudget it was a chance for people to have their say as the council puts the final touches to its budget for 2015/16.

In the coming financial year Wigan Council will need to make savings of £12 million and working on a budget of around £245 million to deliver vital services such as bin collections, highway maintenance and social care.

Mr McKevitt said: “We were impressed with the diverse range of questions we received from the public. It is always important to us to hear about the topics which really matter to Wigan and the question and answer session was also a chance for us to highlight our aspirations and innovative ways we are delivering services with an ever smaller budget.”

The online debate came just a week after Wigan Council announced plans to freeze council tax for a second year as part of The Deal with residents.

If you missed out on the first session there will be a second evening Twitter question and answer session lined up in the coming months.
