PLANS for Tyldesley town centre as part of the guided busway scheme will be on show over the next two days.

Officers from Wigan Council and Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) will be available to discuss the plans today, from 2pm until 7pm and tomorrow, Friday, from noon until 5pm, at Tyldesley Library.

Plans on display at the drop-ins will show other potential busway routes that were explored and the reasons why the Market Square route was chosen.

Work on the square was delayed following a public meeting called by Leigh MP Andy Burnham in November after residents showed their opposition to the plan and a further consultation was promised by TfGM.

Mr Burnham said: "I feel I have fulfilled the commitment I gave at the public meeting to have the work stopped so people can have the chance to have their say.

"I urge people to take advantage of that opportunity and I would also ask the council and TfGM to listen to what is said at the drop-in sessions."

But residents feel let down that Mr Burnham has not fulfilled a promise for a full consultation to be held after he replied to emails from residents.

An admin on the Enough is Enough Facebook posted in response to an email from Mr Burnham: “We thought he agreed to support and get a full consultation review at the Fred Longworth High School meeting and not just a drop in centre to hear the communities views.”

Businesses owners were asked for their views on the plans on Tuesday by officers when Wigan Council and TfGM met with owners to discuss the plans.

Chris Wakefield, owner of Tyldesley IT company Digitopia and member of the Tyldesley Town Partnership, said: “I think it was important that Tyldesley businesses were approached by TfGM and the council.

“The fact is there are many businesses in Tyldesley who welcome the busway because of the investment, transport benefits and redevelopment which are sorely needed and have been for some time.

“In the ten years I’ve had my own business in Tyldesley, and even the previous ten years of working within Tyldesley, I’ve never known such an exciting time in the area.”

TfGM has also sent more than 10,000 leaflets to publicise the drop-in events directly to residents and businesses giving more information about the scheme and answering frequently asked questions.

The leaflet is also available online at tfgm.com/buspriority.
