A DEVOTED dad is hoping to raise money to improve his disabled son's school playground with sales of his new book.

Father-of two, Stuart Kenyon, will be giving 10 per cent of the profits from his books to his son's special educational needs school which is trying to raise £40,000 for sensory equipment for its pupils.

Mr Kenyon's son, Max, aged 10, attends New Greenhall School in Atherton and has severe autism.

Max is unable to talk or look after himself and has the mental age of a 12-month-old child.

As a self-published author, Mr Kenyon has published a fictional futuristic novel, called Subnormal, based on an extremist government which believes even the weakest and most vulnerable need to play their part in the nation's transformation.

The main character, Paul Kelly, who has Asperger's Syndrome, alongside his brother Thomas and the rest of society, who are classed as "subnormal", are sent into isolation and the book follows their fight back against the government.

Mr Kenyon aged, 34, said: "The school does a fantastic job with Max, who has very severe autism and other children who have even more severe learning difficulties and disabilities than he has.

"The children just need something more suitable to play on as they don't have the same sense of danger as other children have.

"The school wants to put in a soft play area and sensory equipment and to buy things like three-wheel trikes for the children to play on and I just want to be able to help.

"I've always wanted to write a book, I did English literature at university but I had just never, up until now, had the inspiration to write it.

"I was reading a book about The Nazis and how people with disabilities and people classed as 'not normal' were treated and especially, at the moment, I feel like people who require help are being somewhat demeaned in our society with cutting benefit allowances and things like that, and with having Max it just inspired me to write.

"Everyone who has read it says it's really good and it has 4.8 out of 5 rating on Amazon.

"If I can help the school and be successful that would be the dream situation."

Liz Loftus, Headteacher at New Greenhall School said: "We are delighted that Stuart Kenyon, one of our parents, has been so thoughtful as to offer 10% of his earnings from his first book.

"At present at New Greenhall School, any fundraising or donations will be spent upon improving our playground facilities.

"We have some fantastic plans in place that will cost approximately £50,000.

"The playground will give all of our pupils with an opportunity to develop their play and social skills.

"We are very excited about the new developments.

"A huge thank you to Mr Kenyon.

"We wish him every success with this book and many more to follow."
