NEIGHBOURS are getting together for a summer street BBQ to encourage community spirit.

Residents from Cotton Close, Leigh, are holding an American themed event in true July 4 fashion on Saturday from 2pm until 6pm.

Organiser Julie Grundy said: "It's quite a new street and we just thought it would be something nice that would bring everyone together.

"We did a Christmas light switch on last year and that went really well.

"We are going to be having a BBQ and a DJ and a bouncy castle for the children and other children's games.

"We haven't got any funding for it we are just putting it together ourselves.

"We have actually set up a facebook group which was more just for security so we could let each other know if anything was happening in the area.

"A lot of people on the street didn't know each other so it was just a way of building those connections.

"Neighbours used to talk a lot more than they do now.

"I am hoping the summer BBQ will be as big of a success and I hope that the weather will be kind to us."

The event is a closed celebration for street residents only.
