NEARLY 4,000 residents have been helped by Atherton and Leigh Foodbank in the past year.

The latest figures from the Atherton-based charity shows that 3,996 three-day emergency food supplies were given to people in crisis from 2015-16 and that more than 52.7 tonnes of food was donated by residents and businesses.

Warren Done, manager of the foodbank on Market Street, said: “We are still seeing an increase in the number of three-day emergency food supplies provided to residents in crisis.

“It rose a further three per cent in the past year."

These pack ensure that recipients have a balanced diet for three days.

As well as providing emergency food the foodbank can provided essentials like washing powder, nappies and hygiene products to families who are struggling.

It has also recently opened a new distribution centre in conjunction with Golborne Community Church.

Warren added: “It is all too easy when you look at figures to forget the real people behind the statistics. They are the reason the foodbank is so vital.

“We are very grateful for the ongoing support of the community and hope that one day there will be no need for us in the area of Leigh and its surrounding towns.

“Until that day comes we will continue to offer the best possible service to help local people facing a crisis.”
