A YOUNG woman from Atherton helped Bents Garden and Home produce a spectacular hanging garden display at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

Becky Sydenham, 25, of Greenfield Road, is the nursery supervisor at the Glazebury gardening centre and the display was viewed by the Queen on Monday.

Several other royals attended this year’s show, including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, with William and Kate attending the world-famous event for the first time.

As one of its longest serving members, Bents Garden and Home was invited to take part in the Garden Centre Association’s 50th anniversary celebrations at this year’s show.

Spearheaded by celebrity gardener Peter Seabrook, the GCA’s hanging basket exhibit is part of The Sun Square featuring numerous different garden designs.

The GCA’s concept features hanging baskets and pots suspended from pergolas to fill the cube of space with colour.

All the containers have been created by members of the association, including one that was designed and planted by Becky with help from planted container specialist Carol Rowson, who is from Leigh.

Rebecca and Carol wanted to create a feature which would stand out from the rest so chose a watering can as the basis for the container.

An oversized can was designed and built especially for the occasion and plants such as cordyline, coleus and iresine were chosen to create a purely foliage-based arrangement.

Trailing plants such as dichondra and astelia pour from the spout to give a sense of flowing water.

Becky, who was at Chelsea at the weekend helping with the final build of the GCA garden, said: “I really enjoyed the show.

"I feel honoured to do this and I hope it highlights to people that horticulture is for people of all ages.

“I have been working at Bents since my school work experience and I love it there.

“I suffer with anxiety and being around the plants and the plant nursery is so relaxing for me.”
