TEAM members from KFC were joined by the mayor and a local councillor as they went out to clean Leigh's streets.

As part of a national 'Great British Spring Clean', organised by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, the team from Leigh's newly-refurbished KFC on Parsonage retail park got involved in cleaning up their local community.

Mayor of the borough Kevin Anderson, Leigh West councillor Dane Anderton, and Wigan Youth Zone members also chipped in as thousands of volunteers have collected around 20,000 bags of litter across the UK as part of the campaign.

The campaign was launched to tackle a growing litter problem across the UK, with a recent study showing that 153 million pieces of litter are estimated to be in England at any one time.

Mayor of the borough, Kevin Anderson, said: “It was great to join KFC for the Great British Spring Clean, pick up some rubbish and hear about what they’re doing to tackle litter.

"Businesses must work with their communities to address little and help keep our local areas tidy.

"I look forward to seeing what KFC has planned and hope to see them continue to keep our streets clean.”

Allison Ogden-Newton, CEO of Keep Britain Tidy, added: "We are delighted that KFC has joined forces with Keep Britain Tidy for a fourth year running to support the Great British Spring Clean and see the benefits of a business absolutely dedicated to making a practical, tangible difference to litter in the communities they serve.

“We work closely with volunteer groups and individuals, so we’re delighted to see KFC partnering with local community groups, demonstrating what a business can do when they engage with – and listen to – those who care about litter”.

Also joining this year’s litter pick was Wigan Youth Zone who have taken part in the Hatch programme, a youth employability programme ‘to that helps young people across the UK who have faced barriers to employment to land their first job.

This year’s Great British Spring Clean campaign, running from 15 March to 31 March, brings together individuals, community organisations, businesses, and councils to make a difference to the environment on the nation’s doorstep.
