A WOMAN has died following a crash on the motorway.
Cheshire Police has confirmed that a pedestrian, a 52-year-old woman from Stoke-on-Trent, has died after being struck by a vehicle on the M6.
A 52-year-old man from Preston was subsequently arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
A spokesperson for Cheshire Police said: "At 12.15am today (April 9), officers came across a collision involving a white car on the M6 motorway between Junction 21 and Junction 21a.
"Shortly after officers discovered that a 52-year-old woman from Stoke-on-Trent had been struck by a vehicle on the M6 to the M62 slip road.
"Attempts to save the woman were conducted, but despite officers’ best their efforts, she was unfortunately pronounced dead at the scene at 1.14am.
"A 52-year-old man from Preston has since been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving."
National Highways took to social media shortly after 1am to confirm that the M6 had been shut due to a "very serious" incident.
The road remained closed until 8.18am.
