The game was everything I thought it would be.

You’ve only got to look at the Oldham side to realise it is full of quality and I expect them to do very well in the Championship One competition.

I think the squad they’ve acquired wouldn’t look out of place in our division.

I’m really pleased to get the win, primarily.

I think we needed it for morale and I’m very pleased with some performances and I think when we fronted up as a team, we showed and exerted what dominance we could.

In the first half there was a sense of the season’s not really around the corner, we were just going through the motions.

I think once we played with a bit more urgency and a bit more direction, and a bit more purpose, we played a lot better, we broke tackles and generally were on top for the whole of the second half.

I was pleased with the returns of Chris Hill, Jimmy Taylor and Steve Maden.

It’s a credit to our medical staff that they can come back and not just prove their fitness but put in a good performance as well.

Brett Longstaff also grew in confidence as the game went on.

He gets you a quick play-the-ball all the time, makes great yards and always puts his hand up when there’s work to be done.

Dave Armitstead, too, did some effective work. You can’t fail but like him, he’s a great footballer and we knew that when we signed him.

He does all his best work in and around where the big defences are and he gets offloads out.

He always breaks the tackle and he gets a quick play-the-ball out that allows the player coming up on the next play to make more great yards.
