Atherton LR 1 Holker OB 0

ATHERTON ended Holker’s six-game unbeaten run with a narrow home win in the North West Counties League First Division on Saturday.

Joel Igenosa netted after 19 minutes to give Atherton a taste of revenge after being beaten by their opponents 11 days earlier at Rakesmoor.

An Atherton ball out of defence wrong-footed the Holker centre backs and Phil Coombe was left with two attackers to deal with as Jon Stephenson slipped the ball through to the overlapping Igenosa.

He ran on to fire under the diving Ollie Bell to put Atherton into a lead that would ultimately prove enough for three points.

Debutant keeper Paul Eatock was relatively untroubled throughout the rest of the half in the home goal.

Holker looked like finding a way back into the game after the break, but found themselves down to 10 men when Nathan Reid was dismissed on 66 minutes.

The visitors continued to have chances, Jamie Pattinson’s volley chested off the line by a LR defender, but Old Boys’ keeper Bell remained the busier.

The hosts found themselves down to 10 men when Darby received a second booking, but held out to secure the win.
