TYLDESLEY Swimming and Water Polo Club took a team of 24 young swimmers to the Wigan Development Gala and came home with a raft of medals - 33 gold, 12 silver and 13 bronze.

The Pelican Centre-based club has been building steadily as a result of the Learn to Swim programme and the team they took to Wigan featured youngsters aged eight to 12, many of whom were experiencing an open swimming gala for the first time.

Catherine Sweeney, Rachel Lawrence, Olivia Galvin and Grace Craddock only finished the Learn to Swim programme three months ago.

The swimmers were led poolside by five coaches from the club's ever growing coaching team. The Pelican Centres' swimming teachers are all volunteer coaches.

Diane Stafford, club president and a director on the management board at the pool said: "All the swimmers did themselves proud and the results reflect their hard work and the teaching at the Pelican Centre and coaching at the club.

"All the swimmers were excellent, especially those that competed for the very first time."
