ATHERTON Collieries needed just one more win heading into last night's trip to Cheadle Town to wrap up the North West Counties First Division title.

Colls wrapped up a convincing 3-0 win over Irlam at Alder House on Monday night which put them within two points of the silverware.

Collieries opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Jordan Cover was brought down from behind in the area. Mark Battersby rifled the ball into the bottom left hand corner to take his league and cup tally to 60 goals this campaign.

Five minutes before the interval, Michael Clegg's side extended their lead when keeper Danny Taberner launched the ball upfield where Cover controlled and took it past the defender before firing home.

Josh Messer threaded a precise ball through to Gareth Peet on the edge of the box. The winger took one touch before striking an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net.

Earlier in the week, Colls wrapped up a 3-1 victory over Holker Old Boys with goals by Mark Battersby (two) and Ben Hardcastle.

In the same division, water supply problems at Crilly Park ensured Atherton LR's tie with Ashton Town was called off.
