REECE Pollitt will become the first Astley and Tyldesley rider to pull on a Great Britain jersey in more than a decade after being picked for the junior team's international against Australia next month.

The 17-year-old, who will compete in the Ashes test at Leicester, follows in the footsteps of Becky Heslop, who raced for Team GB in the USA in 2004.

Pollitt kept up his fine recent form at Gin Pit on Sunday, top scoring for A&T in round four of the Northern Fours.

A&T stormed into an early lead as their star rider recorded a new personal best time to win heat one.

And they held a three-point lead over table toppers Stockport going into the interval but fell away in the second half of the meeting to eventually finish in third place behind winners Stockport and runners-up Bury.

The result left A&T in third place in the table.

A&T remain second in the Northern Junior Grand Prix League table after finishing second behind league leaders Bury.

Three riders raced unbeaten, Joe Quarmby winning the under-10s, Pollitt topping the u19s and Gareth Paine taking the Division Two honours.

A&T had five youngsters who excelled in the first national round of the British Youth and Junior League series at Poole on Saturday.

John White, aged eight, finished second in the u10s A final after scoring 15 points out of 16 in his qualifying races.

Joe Quarmby, 10, won the u10s B final, while his six-year-old brother Max won the u8s C final.

Pollitt was third in the u17s A final and Ciaran Collins, 15, finished fourth in the B final.

St Ambrose pupil Tom Whitwam - a former A&T rider - finished second in the u12s race, losing out to the reigning British champion.

The 11-year-old also took three wins and a second place at Gin Pit on Sunday to maintain his overall lead in the u13s section of the Northern Junior League.
