LOCAL riders featured prominently on the podium at the culmination of the Northern Junior Grand Prix series and the British Youth and Junior League.

Reece Pollitt, of Astley and Tyldesley Cycle Speedway, finished second in the A final of the u17s national series at Wednesbury on Saturday to claim third place overall.

He then followed that up by racing unbeaten in the final race of the regionals at Bury on Sunday to take the Northern u19s title.

St Mary’s High School pupil Tom Whitwam, aged 11, who races for Sheffield, went one better, finishing second overall at the nationals in the u12s category before being crowned Northern u13s Grand Prix champion for the second straight year.

John White, aged eight, raced unbeaten in the Northern u10s to finish second overall – helping Astley and Tyldesley to second place in the final Northern Junior League table – and came fifth in the final reckoning at the nationals after winning the B final at Wednesbury.

Astley and Tyldesley also secured third place in the Northern Fours League after finishing behind eventual winners Stockport and runners-up Bury Comets in the sixth and final meeting of the series.
