IN reply to the ‘ghetto savings’ letter in the Journal on June 2, I am also concerned about the ever expanding Roma community of Leigh, with themed events and even council staff being paid solely to deal with housing the Roma community of Eastern Europe into this crowded little town.
Yet amazingly the head of the council, Lord Peter Smith, along with MP Andy Burnham and Leigh West councillor Susan Greensmith do not seem to have any of these new arrivals near them.
The area that is Leigh West is nicknamed Little Romania by locals. You cannot sell your house unless you give it away.
I think the council has crushed Leigh West on purpose, creating an area no-one wants to live in by housing undesirables. People sell up cheaply, landlords buy this cheap housing and house even more undesirables, creating a ghetto.
